A Who’s Who of Web Design and Crap Detector Improvement

August 10th, 2007

When people ask me for good (x)html and css references, I often blank out and only come up with three names: Eric Meyers, Dan Cederholm, and Jeremy Keith. Yes, Jeremy Keith is more of a JavaScript and Ajax guy, but I always feel compelled to throw his name in the mix. I’ll sometimes spice it up by referring to Dan Cederholm as my personal web design hero or “the Michael Jordan of HTML”

Certainly these three gentlemen are some of the best in the industry, but this leaves out a whole slew of brilliant people. Luckily Will Smith over at evoart recently listed some of the top-notch folks in the industry in his post titled 20 web Design Blogs you should be reading.

There are always going to be people left off a list like this, but this is a great list. You really can’t go wrong reading any books, blogs, or articles by any or all of these folks. Learning any new coding or markup language gets a little easier when you can build up your filter - and identifying the “who’s who” in the industry really helps improve your crap detector.

I’m trying to learn some .NET (gag!) stuff at work and I’m finding it quite challenging to get good information because not only does the closed source stuff seem to have a significantly smaller blogging community compared to the open source community (especially PHP); but I just don’t know who the “top notch” people are, so I’m not certain how to weight the information I’m getting.

  1. Hmm I should read those. I want to make my site awesome and take out all the crap too. Thanks for the links.

  2. @Jenny - Your site is super cute - very nice color scheme =)

Yes, go read these peoples’ books and/or put their blogs in your RSS reader! I highly recommend “Bullet Proof Web Design” by Dan Cederholm. He just revised it so it should be very up to date.

I didn’t really mean the “crap detector” comment about removing crap content from one’s site, but rather knowing who the great thinkers in html/css are so that you know what they are saying/writing is worth paying attention to, and is not crap.

More a matter of “consider the source”

  3. I am a webdesigner: check http://wiredondesign.co.uk

You have given me some interesting information that may help me. thank you

  4. Thanks for mentioning my list in this post Andy! :D.

  5. Thanks much for the tips and the links, I will be checking them out.

I too have a favorite (CSS) designer… being David Shea. I’m sure you guys already are familar with the books but I would also recommend “The Zen of CSS Design” and “Transcending CSS”. Both are really easy reads and quite informative.

I really like your site and am looking forward to reading more.

    Thanks!

  6. good read…I thought those were called rounded corners. I think beveled means something different!!!
