I’ve recently taken up the task of trying to breath life back into the Sacramento Web Design Meetup, which had all but died on the vine. I found dozens of local web design companies on the search engines and (if they actually posted their email address) I sent them an email letting them know about the meetup.

(Embarrassingly enough, I left the subject line out the first time I mailed it, so I mailed it again… then I realized I had mistyped “Meetup” as “Meeup” - professional! I’m usually pretty picky about that stuff, but it is what it is. )

I hope that getting this meetup going again will encourage Sacramento web developers, designers, etc to form more of a tight-knit community (at least a loose association) and to see each other as allies rather than competitors. There’s more than enough work to go around and people/companies in the web design field come in all shapes and sizes when it comes to skills and areas of expertise. I think web design has grown in scope so much that very few individuals or companies can do it all; and often, those that do offer “full service” in fact outsource to other companies or freelancers from time-to-time, if not regularly. So why not outsource within your own community.

This first “revival” meeting will probably be a bit chaotic. I have a few topics I can throw out there to keep things moving, and we will probably be discussing an alternative venue (for the following month), as it would make sense to go somewhere with free wifi, and probably somewhere a little more hip in general. Also, an alternative to Meetup.com would be great (since they charge a fee for their service)… probably upcoming.org, eventful.com. or zvents.com

I hope this can become a fun and informative monthly meeting of local web professionals. I hope to see you there!
