29 xhtml/css coding services

March 19th, 2007

I’ve just entered the apparently crowded marketplace of xhtml/css coding services. While researching the field, I ran across about 5 or 6 services - mostly because they were running ads on various other websites. Then I started looking on the search engines and the list grew to about a dozen. As time has progressed I’ve actually found nearly 30 specialized services (including myself).

Perhaps I’m crazy to list my “competitors”, but I think xhtml/css converion is s a valuable service. Since I’m on the list, and it would be a conflict of interest; I’ll only list the services I have found without reviewing opining. However, I would recommend that you try to go as local as possible - but that’s a personal decision.

I’ve tried to keep this down to companies that specialize in xhtml/css only. Or perhaps more accurately: companies with a URL dedicated to xhtml/css conversion only. Undoubtedly, I will have missed a few, so please comment or email me and I’ll add you to the list.

A few of these were culled from Jonathan Snook’s List of HTML/CSS Services. Also, see Jonathan’s post The Commoditization of HTML. Other resources worth mentioning include:

EDIT 8/10/07 - Added Cooper Mor’s Happy XHTML service to the list.

EDIT 7/11/07 - Casey emailed me to let me know about XHTML King.

EDIT 6/20/07 - Added We’ll Code It to the list. Also see Sam’s comment below (#19) praising the services of We’ll Code It.

EDIT 5/16/07 - I found Hone Watson’s list: A selection of PSD to XHTML CSS Design Services and Providers. Based on Hone’s list, I’ve added XHTML in 24 Hours, Squeegee, Design Creek, and Merix - the latter 3 aren’t xhtml/css-only services (they offer more), but I figured I’d include them to be more complete. By the way, Hone mentions the Aloe Studios logo reminds him of the B5 Media logo - perhaps B5 has a new logo, because I don’t see the resemblance (although I’ll admit, I’m a xhtml/css nerd and not a logo designer!)

EDIT 4/16/07 - Found a Brazilian service (site is entirely in Portugese) CSS Express (added above). So far, I’ve only included and sought out English-speaking sites on this list. I’ll probably limit it to only English-speaking sites due to the fact that I speak only English… but I will include non-English sites when I happen to find them

EDIT 4/13/07 - And the edits just keep coming… Peter from Chop and Code, and Valentin from Slice’r'us have both got in touch to let me know about their services. (both added above)

EDIT 4/12/07 - Found another brand spanking new service called FastSlicer (added above). Since my Google Alerts decided to stop working, I started using Swamii where I found FastSlicer’s forum post on v7n.

EDIT 4/10/07 - Thanks to Claudio for pointing out the designer’s chop shop. Also, Tim Wall points out that HTML Xpress is a coding service (”cutup” service as he calls it) specifically for Light (and he also mentions this blog post… Thanks Tim!).

  1. Thanks for listing me! It’s a great honor! Hope you do well, and get a lot of clients.

    Garrett (Owner of XHTML This)

  2. @Garrett - I wish you the same. You, me, and the others I listed are filling a need. I think there is enough of that need for all of us to keep busy.

It’s a slow and steady process, but I’m building a small base of clients with a semi-steady stream of projects. Building good relationships with clients is key. I’m realizing how much a good old fashioned phone call (rather than lifeless emails) can do to foster a more human connection.

  3. @Andy - I have been in the business since the end of December, so around 3 months. I have got: 34 different clients, so thats around ten a month! Just keep on and you will get the same.

  4. Hey Andy, thanks for including SliceIt to the list. Nicely done. :-)

It’s good to see the different sites who offer the same services, and I wish you all the best with Aloe Studios. Good design you’ve got here.

  5. You’ve managed to make a nice list there!

I wouldn’t worry much if there are so many slicing businesses out there, this is a very big market and one thing you’ll realise is that if you treat a client well, they’ll be loyal to you and keep coming back since most orders will come from designers or design firms.

Good luck with your site :)

  6. Aloestudios…

    ……

  7. Outsourcing CSS?…

  8. Thanks for including me as well :)

  9. Thanks for listing my company PSD2Website.com here, we are providing this service last two years and finally put up the website.

    Thanks again,

    Ajesh Nair
    Founder and CEO PSD2Website.com

  10. [...] bona llista d’aquestes empreses es pot trobar al blog de aloe studios. Posted by mpuig Filed in [...]

  11. And another one - http://www.chopandcode.com/

Gee, I didn’t know there were that many. Good list!

  12. Great list!

    However, you’ve missed one: Slice’r'us

  13. @everyone - Hey, I just want to thank everyone who has sent me their sites so far!

I intend to keep this list maintained as a resource for anyone searching for xhtml/css coding services. I should use a broader name (29 is no longer accurate) - any suggestions?

  14. I like seeing your list of competitors- bold move. However you suggest that people keep it local but from this site there’s no way to find out where you are located. I think you should add some more information about yourself.

  15. @ Laura - Thanks for checking in. You’ve got me there! Luckily I’ve been busy on client projects, and just haven’t had the time to put together the “About” page or even a portfolio for that matter. I’ll be putting these pages up in the near future so for now, here’s a little bit about me/Aloe Studios:

    Name: Andy Ford
Location: Sacramento, California, USA (born and raised!)
Aloe Studios was started in February of 2007. After doing complete web sites as a solo freelancer, I decided it was time to specialize doing what I do best and enjoy most: XHTML and CSS. I’m a sole proprietorship and I do not outsource. I love NBA basketball and my favorite colors are brown and blue.

That will have to do until I get my “about” page together!

  16. But why would I use anyone but you Andy? ;)

Seriously, to those getting here looking for a master list of easy to work with, enthusiastic CSS/XHTML coders (you know, those guys that actually LOVE code), you really needn’t look further than the poster…

Unsolicited feedback from a very satisfied client.

  17. Hello!
Great list and many thanks for putting it together. I am the owner/dogsbody/actually everything, of DesignCreek, and its great to see the competition!

You have a very nice site, and I wish you the best of luck with all your projects!

May we all live and survive harmoniously in this web design world! There’s plenty of clients for all of us!

Rock on valid/semantic xHTML and CSS…. god im such a geek! :D

    Regards,
    Craig Hamnett

  18. Sorry I didn’t mean b5media but 9rules with regards to the logo.

I think you have a great looking site.

  19. I had no idea there were so many sites offering this service. After seeing a banner ad for PSD2HTML I contacted them but didn’t receie a response for days. They advertise “XHTML in 8 hours” but what does that mean if they don’t even respond to your email for 3 days??
I ended up using another service I saw an ad for, wellcodeit.com. I was working under a deadline and they were quick to respond to every email, which made things easy. I haven’t tried these other sites, so I can’t compare, but I would use them again.

    Thanks for the list!

  20. @Sam - Thanks for sharing your experiences. I had found “We’ll Code It” last week, but have been too busy to update the list. Hopefully your experience with PSD2HTML is not typical - I don’t know those guys, but they have been around for longer than just about everyone else.

I recently had a potential customer’s email get caught in my spam filter. The customer wanted several gambling sites done (which I won’t do), and mentioned them all by name/url in the email. They all had either “casino,” “poker,” or “gamble” in the name… and I’m sure that’s why their message went to the spam folder. Just to give PSD2HTML the benefit of the doubt, I wonder if something similar could have occurred if your email had certain “trigger words” that would get it flagged as spam. (just a theory)

As for We’ll Code It, I don’t know those guys either, but they really have a lot to offer. I’m impressed that they are willing to even touch email design. That’s something I just don’t do, and I’ll probably be referring potential clients who need email design over to them.

  21. Andy,

Your list is a great resource. I have reviewed all 39 coders web sites. I hate to reveal my selection method but unless a site has some testimonials and examples of their work, I am moving on. BTW, everybody claims to write “valid” code but plenty of the examples given don’t validate. A word to the wise.

I also look for an email address. I hate using comment forms because most of them don’t offer to send an email copy to me so I have a record of my request. Finally, a black mark for anyone who doesn’t respond. How do I even know that anybody is there?

  22. I just launched an XHTML/CSS service of my own - http://happyxhtml.com/ we’ll see how it goes :).

  23. Thanks, Cooper. I finally remembered to add you to the list!

  24. OK- Andy this is becoming a sorta THE place to launch your XHTML slicing service so here goes- Chk http://www.retroxhtml.com.
